Bathtub Guide
Information about walk-in tubs, liners, refinishing, faucets, manufacturers, and installation.Walk-in Bathtubs
Walk-in bathtubs are tubs built for the elderly and disabled. Typically, they come with an outward or inward facing door. There are some negatives to them – you have to wait a long time for the tub to fill up, they are often leaky, and they can cost up to $15,000. On the other hand, they really can improve the quality of life for many disabled and elderly individuals. There are a few things to keep in mind when buying a walk-in bathtub:
1) Do you want the door to open inwards or outwards?
An inward opening tub is far less likely to leak, but it forces you to sit in the tub while it drains. Not only is this time consuming, it can cause the bather to become very cold and uncomfortable. Additionally, if the bather needed to exit the tub for an emergency, there would be no way out. An outward swinging door is more likely to leak over time, but it is far safe and more practical.
2) How big of a tub do you want?
Remember, you will be sitting in the tub while it fills up. This means that a smaller tub will allow you to take a quicker bath.
3) We recommend Jacuzzi, Premire Bathtubs (made in England), and Wasauna (made in Canada, USA, or Mexico, depending on the model) for Walk-in Bathtubs. These companies build reliable brands that we have tested and heard good things about.
